There are stories buried under each of these tombstones.

cemetery bird tandy PRAt Pioneers Rest Cemetery a mockingbird sings a medley of other birds’ greatest hits atop the tombstone of East Side pioneer Roger Tandy.

cemetery turner books PRAlso at Pioneers Rest two books top the tombstone of Captain Charles Turner, who, when war came, was as “good as gold.”

gause graveThe unusual monument of the family of pioneer undertaker George Gause is at Oakwood Cemetery.

anderson graveAlso buried at Oakwood is Andre Jorgensen Anderson. When Jim Courtright was arrested in 1884, Anderson helped Courtright turn the tables on the law.

hayne graveBritish-born Al Hayne was the only fatality of the Texas Spring Palace fire in 1890. His monument is on Lancaster Street, but he is buried at Oakwood.

paschal rl graveAlso buried at Oakwood is Robert Lee Paschal, who was principal of the Fifth Ward School and Fort Worth High School. The Fifth Ward School burned in 1904, Fort Worth High School in 1910.

gilmore graveIn 1850 Seaborne Gilmore was elected Tarrant County’s first county judge. He was father-in-law of Tarrant County Sheriff John B. York, who was killed in a confrontation with attorney Archibald Young Fowler in 1861. Gilmore is buried between the railroad tracks in little Mitchell Cemetery.

    In the mid-1940s Mr R L Paschal lived in a house on 6th(?) Ave. On more than one occasion I spoke with Mr. Paschal as I delivered the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He was always interested in stories of my classes at his namesake high school.
