“Like a Rock, I Was Strong as I Could Be . . .”

“. . . Like a rock, nothin’ ever got to me”: Four stone buildings seen around town.

Chapel of Ahavath Sholom cemetery (1909) on University Drive.

A former motor court on Jacksboro Highway near Casino Beach.

Apartments (1936) on Ellis Avenue on the North Side. Sandstone from Palo Pinto County.

Over the decades, the South Hills neighborhood has grown up around this ranch house at 3001 Gambrell Street. But the house stands as resolute as the rocks it was built of about 1931. Vestiges of a windmill and stone cistern remain. Built for Dr. Isaac and Ida Withers (see the “W”?), the house sits on half a city block of the original thirteen rural acres.
