Of Hens, Holly, and Ornithology

In our neck of the woods, the two turtle doves of the Christmas song, of course, are as scarce as three French hens’ teeth. But, hey, we’ve got pigeons, don’t we, and what are turtle doves but pigeons with a good PR agent? So, in celebration of Christmas, here—on wing and wall and wire—are pigeons seen around town:

Guarding the parapet of North Side Coliseum (1908).

Flocking together at the Intermodal Transportation Center clock tower (2002).

Wiretapping over the river (top) west of the Pier 1 building (2004) and (bottom) south of the West Vickery Street bridge.

Keeping a lonely vigil on the cartouche over the entrance of the former headquarters of the Texas State Teachers Association (1930) on Weatherford Street.
